Code of Ethics Training Deadline: Dec. 31, 2021

To retain their Realtor status, members must satisfy NAR’s Code of Ethics training requirement within the next 24 days if they haven’t already done so.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Since 2001, the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) has required Realtors® to schedule Code of Ethics training to retain their membership, and a deadline is looming: Dec. 31, 2021.

Realtors who have not yet taken the training still have educational options to complete it on time, and those that have completed the Code of Ethics training should confirm it’s been registered on NAR’s website.

According to NAR, failure to complete the Code of Ethics training carries some harsh penalties, including, “suspension of all Board/Association-provided membership rights, privileges and services (including those provided by the State and National Association) not available to nonmembers for a period of not less than thirty (30) days and not longer than one year, on terms and conditions expressly stated for an established period of time, including use of the terms Realtor And Realtor-Associate …”

Originally, NAR required Code of Ethics training every four years, but it changed the requirement to every two years in 2017. However, a presidential advisory group (PAG), appointed in 2019 then recommended every three years so members had more time to fit it into their continuing education schedule, and local associations had more time between cycles to administer the program.

Training may be completed through NAR’s courses or through another method, such as online or classroom courses offered by Florida Realtors and others.

Some courses offered by third-party providers designed for state CE credit may also count towards NAR’s Code of Ethics Training Requirement, but NAR does not track those courses or approve them. Individuals considering courses that do double duty – both CE credit and the Code of Ethics requirement – should confirm that with their local association of Realtors.
